Reflections from Alicia’s Birth

Birth can be so healing. So exhilarating. Seeing someone surrender into a journey to the depths of their core. Going inward. To a place of knowing. A space of trust. In themselves. In their baby. It’s so incredible to witness.

Birth doesn’t always go this way, especially within the system. But when it does, it’s such a beautiful reminder of what is possible. Of what we’re capable of. The power we possess. A reminder of how humanity continues to exist through this process that has always been. How it existed before patriarchal rule and opinion over our bodies. Trust in ourselves, trust in each other. Full accountability and full dedication to this sacred act. Giving oneself up to whatever is in the present moment and allowing what’s physiologically natural to progress. No state of emergency. No looking at them like they are a problem that needs solving. Instead to just witness. To hold space. To serve as a reminder that they are seen in all their power. Witnessing someone bring life forth and not being afraid of it. Not looking for ways to save someone from the process. Fully trusting in their ability to birth their baby.

Being in the room when all that comes together is pure magick. It creates healing ripples through the generations that came before us and the generations to come. It’s a blessing and an honor to witness to a birth like this. And it’s a difficult reality to also acknowledge that this is not our cultural norm. The healthcare system is awful. Maternity care is deplorable. And sometimes things go so beautifully and everyone shows up and gets out of the way.

I like to think that with each person that gets to birth in their full power, we begin to reclaim that essence that no one can take away from us. The force of nature that we already have inside of us. This is how we change the world. Grateful for another beautiful new life choosing to join us here on earth and for bringing all the lessons and expansive experiences to foster in a rebirth of the way we are existing in these bodies.
